Fifties Forever

50's kitchen

Well, it took me forever to stumble onto Dwell, so I guess it makes sense that we were midway through our project when I finally found HouseBlogs.net. 'Cause, ya know, I'm slow like that.

There was a plethora of yummy linkage to be found there, and I particularly loved reading about the ranch-house revival that seems to be sweeping the, ah, blogosphere. I grew up in a ranch home in Peoria, Illinois. I have a special place for them in my heart.

I also spent a little while at Flickr looking at ever more fifties nostalgia, and stumbled upon this awesome tilework. *DROOL*

What is it about sea foam and aqua? They, too, hold special places in my heart along with avocado and chrome.

Of course you love seafoam green and aqua and avacado green... those were the colors of the house on Altorfer Lane before we remodeled! (but we kept the avacado range and frig until we moved to Houston. THERE, the whole house was avacado green inside and out!

Mmmmm. I especially like the avacado green appliances that are shaded slightly brown toward the outside edges. Like a real avacado going stale!

Actually, I mostly remember the appliances and fixtures from Grammy's basement kitchen--especially the formica-topped table where we used to play cards. And most of the light fixtures David and I love totally look like Grampa's sconces from his den and bar.

Of course, I do miss the avocado-green wood-textured paneling from the basement on Altorfer. And we're gonna have a big ol' picture window in our livingroom just like the one that faced the gully :-)

I have that rolling cart. I bought it at a yardsale. It has a hospital id# on the back. That's what it looks like to me - older hospital furniture. I like it.
